We live in a world of excess images where development in imaging technologies constantly opens new ways of depicting countless aspects of reality. The mechanical retina can render things visible that are not visible for the human eye — Earth seen from far above, microscopic life forms and movements faster than our eyes can perceive... Those images need encoding as we are unfamiliar seeing those things with our naked eye and therefore can’t always recognize what is imaged. Imaging technologies that are meant to enrich and improve human sight provide us with imagery that disables our comprehension.
